How to Start a Dropshipping Business (Step by Step)

Starting a business from scratch can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never built one before. The good news? Dropshipping makes it easier than ever.

With minimal upfront costs, no need to buy inventory, and the flexibility to work from anywhere, dropshipping is one of the best business models for beginners who want to start a lifestyle business.

So if you’ve ever wondered how to start a dropshipping business step by step, this guide is for you. I’ll walk you through exactly what to do, in order, so you can launch your store in as little as three weeks, even if you’re starting from zero.

How to Start a Dropshipping Business (Step by Step) - 21 Day Calendar

Step 1: Choose a Profitable Niche (Days 1–2)

Your niche determines everything: your products, your suppliers, and your customer base. Spend the first two days brainstorming at least 50 niche ideas.

Criteria for a winning niche:

  • High-ticket products ($200+ each, ideally with an average order value around $1,000).
  • No strong brand loyalty (avoid niches where customers only want Apple, Nike, or Bose).
  • Upper-middle-class demographic (households earning $150,000+ annually).

Look around your home, browse big-box retailers, or scan Amazon’s bestseller categories for inspiration. Don’t overthink it. Just get 50 ideas down; you’ll validate them in the next step.

Step 1: Choose a Profitable Niche

Step 2: Validate With Market Research (Days 3–5)

Now it’s time to narrow your list of 50 down to one. Use these three filters:

  • Demand – Check search volume using Google Keyword Planner, or our Drop Ship Lifestyle Software. If thousands of people are searching monthly, that’s a green flag.
  • Competition – Look for niches with 10–20 active retailers. Too little means no demand; too much means expensive ads.
  • Suppliers – Make sure there are enough suppliers in your region, ideally 20–30. Bonus points if they stock products made domestically.

At the end of Day 5, choose your niche and commit to it. Keep the rest of your list for future stores.

Step 3: Build Your Shopify Store (Days 6–10)

This is where things get real. Even if you’ve never built a website, Shopify makes it simple.

Essential setup tasks:

  • Register a domain name.
  • Sign up for Shopify and choose a responsive, customizable theme.
  • Create your legal pages (Privacy Policy, Returns, Shipping).
  • Upload demo products and placeholder images.
  • Create a professional email address using your domain.

By Day 10, your store should look polished enough to show suppliers. Remove the password protection so it’s live.

Note: I had my team build a demo store so you can experience how your future store should look and function. Here's the link: https://shakasurfboards.com/

Step 4: Get Approved With Suppliers (Days 11–15)

You can’t sell without products—and suppliers won’t take you seriously unless you already have a live store.

During this stage, reach out to 20–30 suppliers in your niche. Use a professional email, explain who you are, and why you want to sell their products. Aim to get at least 5 approvals by Day 15.

Once approved:

  • Collect product catalogs, pricing sheets, and images.
  • Upload real products to your store.
  • Remove demo products.

Step 5: Optimize for Conversions (Days 16–18)

Now that you have real products, it’s time to make sure your store can actually convert.

Checklist:

  • Enable Shopify Payments so you can accept credit cards.
  • Test your checkout process from start to finish.
  • Check all links, buttons, and menus on desktop and mobile.
  • Add your phone number in the header for trust.
  • Ensure product pages have high-quality images, compelling descriptions, and clear CTAs.

This is the polish that separates a store that gets traffic from one that makes sales.

Step 6: Launch Traffic Campaigns (Days 19–21)

Your store is ready. Now it’s time to bring in customers.

  • Google Shopping Ads – Upload your products to Google Merchant Center and run Shopping Ads. These capture customers who are already searching with buying intent.
  • Facebook Dynamic Retargeting Ads – Install the Facebook Pixel and run retargeting campaigns. This follows visitors who didn’t buy and brings them back.
  • Google Analytics – Enable eCommerce tracking so you can monitor what’s working, and where sales are coming from.

By the end of Day 21, you’ll have real traffic, real products, and a store capable of making sales.

  • Hi, my name is Roberta and I’m starting a new journey with dropshiping. I loved your work, I would love to be part of your team, but my English is terrible and that’s why I’m afraid I won’t be able to. But you are an inspiration, I am studying English and soon I will be able to participate in your course.

    • Hi Roberta,

I wouldn’t even know that English is not your native language based on your comment 🙂

You should go for it. I’m sure you’ll do great!

  • Demitra Douglas says:

Thanks so much for the information. Having the steps broken down like that makes it more easier to understand how to start drop shipping. I’m actually excited to get started and finally have financial freedom. I’m ready to be my own boss!!

    • You’re welcome, Demitra!

Wishing you nothing but success on your journey to financial freedom 🙂

  • Looking forward to it

    • Anton Kraly says:

Same! We will be here when you’re ready to build your own highly profitable, semi-automated online store 🙂

  • Hi Anton,
I am excited about your offering but the issue is that I am even less literate operating a computer. I do not know how much of literacy your course requires and, would you trot along with me?

    • Hi John,

I designed the course to share advanced knowledge in a way that anyone can understand so you should have no problems.

And if you ever do, we provide priority support so you will do just fine 🙂

  • Hi Anton, your course seems different and more to the point (after watching the seminar tonight) than Alison J Prince’s version she sells. Can you tell me how you two differ? I purchased her plan and I am out 1k and very frustrated and lost. When you explained I didn’t have to dropship crap from China you had my attention.

    • Hi Karen,

I do not know who that is so I cannot comment on how we’re different…

What I can say is that I’ve been doing this since 2007 and I have been helping others to do the same since 2012.

We are also the only program ever to be voted best eCommerce course by Shopify.

If you’re looking to get started, I’d be more than happy to help 🙂

      – Anton

  • I am in the beginning phase of researching how to start a dropship business. I want to start contacting vendors but I don’t have demo products on my website. I’m not sure how I should find images for demo products with copyright issues and I don’t want to contact vendors without any merchandise on my website. I might have to sign up for your course. Your insight would be greatly appreciated.

    • Hi Kaitlin,

I would highly recommend enrolling in the Drop Ship Blueprint 🙂

This is covered in detail in Module 3, which is all about building your store.

  • I want to know about the Google voice

  • Can i learn everything,(to get started) in your free webinar or I need to by your course for Only $2997 Today ?

    • Hi Paul,

The webinar is definitely enough to get started!

  • Thanks for the good business idea, I haven’t any experience in this ecom business, how can I do this business with a home made food product ?

  • I was on a webinar tonight about getting a course on Amazon FBA. They talked about all the money everyone was making and then they said you have to buy the merchandise in China, pay a 3rd Party guy to “inspect” it before leaving warehouse in China, pay for shipping to the USA and on and on.I am new to this I can’t pay that cost upfront hoping to make money, the Course alone was $1997.00 .

  • Anton, you’re a special trainer, truly. I have gained so much in this post especially the starting costs of DS.
    Thank you.

    • Anton Kraly says:

Thank you for the kind words, Madu 🙂

  • Great share! Thank you for the post Anton.

    • Anton Kraly says:

You’re welcome, Stephen! Happy to know it brought you value.

  • Hey Everyone,

As many of you already know I created Drop Ship Lifestyle after selling a network of eCommerce stores and then trying to find a community of other store owners to network with… What I found was a bunch of scammers who promised newbies they would get rich quick by following their push-button systems!

This led me to create a new community along with an online training program that shares how to build a REAL online business.

I’d love to hear what you think… it’s a 2.5-hour training designed to help you dropship profitably… all for free.

Be sure to click here to check it out and send me your feedback!

If you go through the “How To Start & Grow A Hyper-Profitable Online Store” webinar and still have questions just contact me and I will help you out.

  • That’s cool that starting a drop shipping company doesn’t need a lot of cash upfront. It’d be nice because all you’d really need is to pay for the raw materials then pay someone to deliver it. You already know how to make the product, so you would just need to find someone you can trust to make your business’s deliveries.

  • If my google product listing ads campaign has been running for 2 weeks but it jus has 300 impressions and 4 clicks. Will my niche succeed? Should I delete this store and start over or wait for results from google PLAs.
After about months without sales, should I start over?

    • Anton Kraly says:

All that means is that your budget and / or targeting is off! My advice is to share your results on our forum or on one of our coaches calls. That should be an easy fix 😉
