Every day, your store is leaking money—and you might not even realize it. Inconsistent sales are a harsh reality for many e-commerce stores today. There are many reasons behind this, and they’re all fixable.
In this blog, I’ll focus on five of the most common mistakes that may be silently killing your sales. Using my experience, I’ll give you expert tips and solutions on how to turn things around. Don’t let your sales continue dropping!
Mistake #1: You’re Ignoring Your Best-Selling Products
Many store owners aren’t focusing on their top-performing products enough. Remember, they’re best-sellers for a reason—you already know many of your target audience are buying them. If you’re ignoring them, you won’t be able to maximize your customers' interest. So, double down on these products.
Check your Shopify store to see which products are already selling well. After that, improve whatever you’re doing around them. There are two ways to do that:
Go to Google Ads and increase the cost per click (CPC) for your best-selling products. Spend a little bit more on them. This will help push them to the top of the list and increase clicks. Remember, more clicks, more chances of sales.
You can also boost your daily campaign budget to support this. With a higher budget spent, you can have more clicks on those product pages.
The issue might lie within your product pages. Check what you may be lacking. It can be product images, product descriptions, promotions, etc. Make sure that the product pages make it easier for your potential customers to see how the product will benefit them.
Ensure there are multiple clear, high-quality images.. At the same time, product descriptions must be easy to read, and the product benefits must be highlighted or emphasized.
Mistake #2: Your Website Is Turning Customers Away
Aside from the product pages, your whole website might be pushing your customers away. Are you sure your customers find it easy and engaging to use your website? These are the most common issues that can drive them away:
Slow load times
Poor experience using mobile phones
Confusing navigation
Remember, online shoppers today aren’t tolerant of problems like this. They’ll simply leave your store and shop elsewhere.
Do the following to improve customer experience on your website:
Your site must load quickly to retain visitors. Make sure images on your site are optimized—compressed and have the right resolutions and dimensions. If you’re using Shopify, ensure that you’re using a lightweight theme or one without excessive features. You can also limit your use of third-party apps and scripts.
Make it easy for customers to purchase and pay for your products. Simplify the checkout process, like a one-page checkout. For the forms, reduce the fields they have to fill in—prioritize necessary information like address, contact number, etc.
Make sure your site is mobile-friendly and intuitive to use, especially since many shoppers buy using their phones nowadays. Here are some tips you can follow:
Check your website on your phone to get a full picture of your customers’ mobile experience and identify the right issues.
Avoid immediate pop-ups. At the same time, make sure they don’t cover up the entire mobile screen if you have them.
Make sure the spacing and text aren’t awkward and are right for a mobile view.
Your shipping details and policies should be visible and easy to read.
Mistake #3: Your Pricing Strategy Is Driving Buyers to Competitors
You could be losing sales because customers are choosing your competitors instead. One main reason for this is your pricing—many shoppers try to find options where they can spend less. If your competitors are offering better deals, like faster shipping or bonuses, then shoppers will likely be more interested in buying from them.
The only solution to this is to improve your own offers and strategies. Here’s how to do that:
Google the name of your products and visit your competitors’ sites. Check what they’re offering differently. This will help you strategize better.
Add more unique value to your store, like product bundles or bonuses.
Offer better service to your potential customers. For example, be easy to contact and ensure you’re answering queries quickly.
Mistake #4: You’re Not Retargeting Lost Visitors
98% of store visitors leave without buying—yet most stores don’t bring them back. Avoid this mistake by using remarketing strategies like retargeted ads and email. This is a strategy where businesses use targeted ads to users who have previously interacted with their brand to re-engage them and encourage further action. If you have visitors who didn’t buy, you’re going to lose those potential sales forever if you don’t do this.
The best way to fix this is to set up remarketing ads and email campaigns. Run Google and Facebook remarketing ads that will show up on your lost visitors' end. At the same time, send abandoned cart emails to visitors who added products to their carts but left without finishing the checkout process.
These ads and emails help keep your brand and offerings top of mind. They’ll also help convince them to finally make a purchase, especially since you know they’ve already shown interest.
Mistake #5: No Email Strategy to Drive Repeat Sales
Loyal customers contribute a lot of sales. If you’re not leveraging what you have with your past buyers, your store will continue to lose sales. So, don’t let things end once they order from you and receive their package. It should go beyond that to encourage and drive repeat purchases.
The best way to maintain that connection with your customers is through email. Send follow-up emails to avoid losing potential revenue from your past buyers.
Build an email list of your past customers. Develop promo campaigns and send them to this email list. Send targeted emails to users with abandoned carts—consider including limited-time promotions. Lastly, to encourage them to stay loyal to your store, you can send emails with customer loyalty offers, like exclusive discounts.
Conclusion
To summarize, the most probable reasons for your store losing sales include:
Not maximizing your best-selling products
Poor website performance results in a poor customer experience
Competitors offer better deals and promos
Letting lost store visitors go
Not encouraging repeat sales from past customers
Fortunately, all of these problems have clear solutions. With the right strategies and actions, you can immediately regain your lost sales and drive more sales to your business.
