How to Find Best Selling Products on Shopify Stores

Finding the right and profitable product is one of the biggest challenges of starting a business. Many dropshippers struggle with this but it’s crucial that you sell a product or product line that people will actually buy. The best way to do this is by dropshipping best selling products.

In this article, I’ll discuss the different ways you can find Shopify best selling products and how you can take advantage of product opportunity gaps to build a profitable dropshipping business.

Ways To Find Best Selling Products

Despite the challenge, there are still many opportunities how you can find the best selling online products. Since it can be overwhelming, especially if you’re just starting out in the eCommerce industry, below are some of the best ways you can try.

1. Solve a Customer Pain Point

Solve a Customer Pain Point

This will always be one of the best and most effective ways to identify a product that people will want to buy. Customer pain points are the problems experienced by your target customers.

Think of it this way: Tylenol wouldn’t be popular if people didn’t experience severe headaches. In short, you’ll solve the problems your customers are facing so you can narrow down on what products you will sell. Or, you can also target abstract customer pain points. With these, you’ll solve the poor customer experiences they have with the existing selection of available products.

For example, you can talk to your target customers, which let’s assume are pet owners. Ask around what pain points they’re struggling with in the eCommerce marketplace. They can be frustrated with the available pet toys in the market, which are expensive but low-quality. Based on this, you can gain inspiration for what kind of products you’ll sell — affordable and durable pet toys. When you’ve gained traction with these products, you can add other pet supplies as well.

That’s why this is an effective strategy for finding the best selling products. You sell what people need. Pay close attention to what common pain points there are so you can come up with a profitable product idea.

2. Search For Trends Early

trend vs fad

Start identifying trends early enough. This way, you can establish yourself as a leader in the market before other sellers discover them too. You just need to remember one thing: a “fad” is different from a genuine “trend.”

A fad is a product that suddenly surged into popularity based entirely on novelty or gimmick. Although they can be good marketing or business opportunities, take note that if you build your business around a fad, the demand and interest for the product will eventually slow down and disappear.

On the other hand, a trend is a product that solves or fulfills a certain existing need in a new way. It’s a new solution and focuses on the constant needs of shoppers, which is why the demand for it lasts longer than a fad. Imagine how popular your product can get if you’ll be one of the first ones to sell it.

Here are some ways you can keep an eye on what’s trending:

  • Reddit: You can check Reddit for what’s popular among the users. You can find forums on the platform about almost anything.
  • Trend Hunter: This is a large and popular trend community. It uses AI, data, and real people to determine consumer insights and new business opportunities.
  • Google Trends: You can check the popularity of different topics over time. Determine which ones are trending and getting spikes of interest over time.
  • Social Listening: You can use social media platforms and look at trending topics or hashtags. You can go on Facebook and Twitter, or use a social listening tool to identify and monitor trends on the platforms over time.

3. Find Product Opportunities In Keywords

It’s a well-known fact that organic traffic from search engines is some of the best traffic you can get.  That’s why another good strategy that many online sellers use is keyword research. This means you’ll find product opportunities using keywords that online shoppers search on search engines like Google. This involves identifying the number of searches and overall competition of certain keywords and searches.

This strategy can be technical but don’t worry, it’s easy to do. Its main advantage is matching the product demand to existing keywords so you get consistent organic traffic from Google. Although there may be some risks, like your store being overly exposed to changes in Google’s algorithm, this is still one of the best ways to find best selling products.

Decide on what products you want to sell then use a keyword research tool, like Google Keyword Planner. Enter your product ideas and the tool will provide you with the popular keywords related to it as well as some numbers or data about its search volume, popularity, etc.

Use the data to identify which keywords or best selling online products have been trending for a period of time.

4. Consider Products With High Profit Margin

Consider Products With High Profit Margin

Look for products where you can get high profit margins, which are products with less overhead costs. It’s easier to achieve higher profit margins with these kinds of products.

Remember that it’s important that you know how much profit you’re making from every sale. It will help you determine how many sales you need to make to cover your costs or to check if your business is actually making a profit.

When pricing your best selling products, make sure to consider the total resources and expenses you’ve put in to sell the product. This includes the costs to get the product, to promote it, and even the shipping costs. The higher the margin, the higher the profit you’ll earn.

To identify some Shopify best selling products, you can look for low-cost items that can add a high profit margin so you can generate a high return on investment as well. These can be items that are lightweight, small or anything that wouldn’t cost too much to ship or for customers to buy.

5. Market Research

This is the most commonly used method of finding best selling online products for Shopify. Market research is when you browse and research what products are trending on different online marketplaces, like Amazon, eBay, and even Etsy.

It will be easy to browse these marketplaces since all sellers are gathered into one entire marketplace, unlike in Shopify where each seller can create their own store and site. You can simply go to their ‘What’s Hot,’ ‘Most Wished For,’ and other related sections to see their best selling products.

Based on the research you make and the information you’ve gathered, narrow down your list of potential product ideas into what you think you can sell. Also, if you can, check how many stores or sellers are already offering those products. Check the demand or search volume for the products. You don’t want to enter an oversaturated market due to the competition.

6. Browse Other Shopify Stores

Browse Other Shopify stores

This is another easy way of finding products. When looking through other Shopify stores, especially if you have a product idea in mind, you can use and add this to the end URL of the store or site: /collections/all?sort_by=best-selling.

You can also replace the “all” with a specific collection name so you can see the best selling products within a certain collection. For example, let’s say you want to check out the Shaka Surfboards store. You have its site URL which is https://shakasurfboards.com/.

To go to all of its collections and check all best selling products, add the text and it will become like this: https://shakasurfboards.com/collections/all?sort_by=best-selling.

If you want to check a portion of their best selling products from a particular collection, which let’s say is their collection of beginner boards, change the “all” into that collection name. The URL will become like this:  https://shakasurfboards.com/collections/beginner-boards?sort_by=best-selling.

This works on almost all Shopify stores and it will allow you to directly go to the best selling online products and not their landing pages. From there, like with Amazon, eBay, and Etsy, you can identify best selling products you’re going to check the demand and market as well.

7. Go With Your Passion

It's true that choosing a niche and product line based on your own passion and interests can be risky. But, it would still be a good start in finding the best selling products. Take a close look at your hobbies and interests and turn them into a profitable business. Hobbies can really be a good source of best selling products. Some people even use them in creating their own unique products to sell.

Moreover, if you’re passionate about or interested in your product or niche, you’re more likely to stay motivated and overcome challenges as you build and grow your business. By considering your passion, interests, and hobbies, you can easily narrow down and select the best selling online products from a large pool of options.

It would also be easier for you to create relevant content and market your product. You can add more value to your customers and provide handy advice and recommendations based on your personal experiences. Lastly, if customers notice that you’re passionate about your products and business, it can help build trust and increase conversions.

8. Be Open For Opportunities

Always be on the lookout for new opportunities and keep an open mind. New ideas can simply pop up at the most unexpected moments and it’s important to take note of these ideas. List them down in your phone or a notebook so you can refer back to them later on when it’s time to perform a market research or keyword research for your product ideas.

You may even be able to use these ideas for future expansion opportunities in your business. That’s why it’s important to always be open to opportunities, even after you’ve established your store.

9. Utilize Customer Reviews on Existing Products

Utilize Customer Reviews on Existing Products

There are a lot of insights you can get from customer reviews. It doesn’t matter if you already have an established store or you’re just starting out, you can check yours or that of the other stores respectively.

If you have a store, look at what your customers are saying about your current products. Look out for any interesting ideas or trends you can use as inspiration for your next relevant product or product line. You should also pay attention to their complaints.

If you don’t have a store yet, you can look at customer reviews from other stores and for other products or brands in the niche you want to enter. Look for the same things and pay attention to what the customers want more about the products.

Product Opportunity Gap

An opportunity gap is a gap in the market that the existing businesses or new businesses are yet to fill up. It’s a void you can fill up by introducing a new product that requires an in-depth understanding of the market and product distribution.

You can identify these opportunity gaps through market research or by looking at trending or best selling products or ideas on search engines or social media. Once identified, you can use this gap to either refine an already existing product or offer a completely new product to the market.

If you’re looking for the best selling products, identifying these product opportunity gaps is a good way to do it. It will give you the advantage of being the first to offer something missing from the existing products or market that other businesses aren’t paying attention to.

Aside from this, you can also check opportunity gaps in relation to your competitors, especially if you’ve already decided on your niche. For example, if a competitor is losing distribution or isn’t offering enough products within your market, but the demand remains high, this might be a good space you can access.

Find Best Selling Products - Conclusion

Although finding the best selling products can be tricky, there are many ways you can do it. Remember that choosing the right product or product line can influence your path to success. It will control how to run the entire business so hopefully, the methods and ideas above will help you find the product people want.
